For one reason or another, you may have to move. Whether it’s because of your profession or just a desire, you must prepare to pack your suitcase. Don’t panic when you see the volume of your belongings. We have some tips for you to pack your belongings properly.
5 tips for packing your things when you move
1. Start by decluttering
Start going through your stuff at least two weeks before your move, if you can. Working one piece at a time, start with large items that you don’t want to move, such as heavy furniture, heavy tires, and anything with dangerous chemicals. Call a dumpster rental company or hauling service to dispose of items like these.
Sort the rest of your belongings into three categories: pack, sell, give away, and throw away. Sell anything in good condition at a garage sale or online. Donate things that won’t sell but are still in decent condition and throw away anything unwanted.
2. Pack useful items last
Identify all the things you will need to find easily in your new home. Load them last when packing your belongings into the moving truck so they are unloaded first. This will ensure that important items are easy to find when you arrive.
3. Insulate your valuables
During your move, there will certainly be items that you do not want to pack in the moving truck, such as jewelry, financial documents, etc. Keep these items with you to avoid confusion when you arrive at your new apartment.
4. Label your moving boxes
Organization is the key to a successful move. That’s why it’s important to put labels on your moving boxes. Such a small task can make the difference once you get to your new home to find certain items. It also allows professional movers to easily identify valuables and breakables.
If you have the advantage of knowing the floor plan and cabinet layout of your new home, label the boxes with instructions for where they go, not where they come from. Unpacking and installation will be easier if all the boxes end up in the correct parts.
5. Take care when packing fragile items
Fragile items deserve the utmost care. Take all the necessary measures to secure them, especially during transport. Use extra packing paper and wrap each item individually. You can also use whatever you have available, such as rags or towels, to pad the top and bottom of the box. Most importantly, don’t forget to put a “Fragile” label on the box so your movers know to be careful.
